| Old
age is regarded as 'second childhood'. This is an age
where our elders need utmost care. They are as delicate
as a newborn child, whether they are as healthy as any
youth or bedridden. They need love, tenderness, compassion,
constant caring and attention. In fact without them
realizing they do tend towards behaving like children
when making demands and refusing to follow instructions.
While
old age is the period of retirement, it is difficult
for a person to accept dependency, especially someone
who has been independent and self-dependent all his
life. Even one who has become invalid throws tantrums
and makes it difficult for the caretakers simply because
he/she is more so battling the need to depend on others.
Family members find it difficult to cope up with such
circumstances, they become impatient, which causes
more problems, than solving any.
It
is here that an Adult day care plays the role that
the family fails to; no matter what maybe the reasons.
Apart from the fact that the family is unable to cope
with the aged family member's demands, no member of
the family may be able to give the amount of time
and efforts required to tend to the aged member of
the family.
While
there are certain adult day care centers where aged
family members could be dropped off during the day,
there are also day care service providers who send
home staff to take care of the person or persons within
the confines of your home. Employing adult day care
in any form or the other helps the family to a great
extent. The services include providing companionship,
administering medication regularly, providing meals,
and all other aspects of tending to the senior citizen;
whether healthy or invalid.
